Basic Men's Slouch Hat

My younger brother came to me, admittedly, quite a while ago, asking for a black slouch hat.  He wanted something very plain, basic, with no "Frou-Frou".  So, I finally came up with this very basic crocheted slouch hat that really only uses two different stitches - mostly just to keep my mind occupied while I worked on it!  You can't really tell that there are two different stitches used, though.  The most you can see is some subtle striping, which is likely caused more from the fact that this piece is essentially worked flat than the stitches used.  I think it came out just the way he wanted it to, and I hope you like it, as well!

Materials

  • 1 sk Caron Simply Soft in Black
  • Size H Crochet Hook
  • Yarn sewing needle

Hat
For rib border, ch 4.
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.  Ch1, turn.
Row 2: work sc in front lp only in each st.  Ch 1, turn.
Repeat row 2 for 80 more rows, then being careful not to twist, join final row with a sl st to foundation ch to form a circle, ch 1.

Row 1: Working along side of rib border, work hdc into each row end, joining with sl st to first hdc - 80 hdc.  Ch1, turn.
Row 2-3: hdc in each st, join with sl st.  Ch1, turn.
Rows 4-6: dc in each st, join with sl st.  Ch1, turn.
Repeat Rows 1-6 3 more times, working Row 1 as hdc in each st, join with sl st.  Ch1, turn.

Crown
Round 1-3:  Work 2 dc tog around, join with sl st.  Ch 1.

Finishing
Sew up crown of head, and weave in all ends.

  3. Do I absolutely NEED the crochet sewing needle? I'm new to crocheting and I only have a H and an I hook. Id really like to make this though, my boyfriend has been asking me to make him something like this

    1. Yes. Use the H crochet hook to make the hat. The yarn needle is only for sewing in the loose ends of yarn at the very end of your project.

    2. no, I dont have a needle so is run my hook in and out of the holes and pull through the loose ends and it works just fine.

  5. 80 stitches seems way to big for the ribbing? Any suggestions?

    1. 80 rows, not stitches. It makes a fairly thin band thar's 80 rows long, or around.

  6. 80 stitches seems quite big but a mens beanie is bigger right? how much did it measure when laid flat? (width wise)

  7. How can this be made a little smaller? I am sure my year old granddaughter would like it since she prefers plain things but her head is not all that big (mine is but not sure if this big!).
